Air attack ‘kills many Taleban’
The US-led international force has carried out an air attack in eastern Afghanistan, killing about 33 Taleban militants, the coalition says.
Helicopters and bombers attacked large groups of insurgents in Khost province, bordering Pakistan, the coalition said in a statement.
The attack came after a reconnaissance aircraft spotted the insurgents on Monday night.
Fighting has intensified in Afghanistan in the last few months.
The rebels, armed with rocket-propelled grenades and other weapons, were spotted by a coalition reconnaissance aircraft on Monday night, alliance spokesman Lieutenant Nathan Perry was quoted by news agency AFP as saying.
“After positively identifying the militants, coalition forces engaged with them using attack helicopters and close air support bombers,” he said.
There was no independent verification of the casualties.
Meanwhile, the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) says it carried out a joint operation with Pakistani troops along the Afghan-Pakistan border against a group of militants who were retreating into Pakistan.
